The
Country divided
War broke out again between Denmark and Britain in 1807. The British Navy bore
down through the Sound in August and large forces were landed. The bombardment
of Copenhagen followed resulting in the surrender of the city and the loss of
the Danish fleet. In the years immediately afterwards, the British ships were
positioned in the Danish belts cutting off the Danish ships. The optical telegraphs
were to prove very important in this situation.

The optical telegraph can be seen on the fortress. The Danes were so anxious
to avoid provoking the British that they allowed the British to anchor on the
roads of Elsinore allowing them to obtain provisions from the town.
