The Napoleonic Wars
In 1801, during the Napoleonic Wars, the first optical telegraphs were introduced
into Denmark. Threatened by attacks from the British Navy, the Danish Admiralty
became convinced of the sense of the Signalling Commission´s proposal
to establish a line of Fisker-type telegraphs along the coast of the Sound.
It was political strategies, therefore, that resulted in Fisker´s telegraph,
rather than Walterstorff´s, becoming widely used in Denmark.
Kronborg
Castle, Helsingør, with a telegraph at the "telegraph tower".
Copper engraving, undated. Post & Tele Museum.
Kronborg Castle was one of the most important stations in the first telegraph
line. The stations near Kronborg often had difficulty in reading the telegraph,
when the smoke rose up from the town and the fortress.
